COVID-19 Mobile Vaccine Clinic

My Role:

Lead Graphic Designer

Objectives:

  1. Encourage vaccination of all age groups through the Sudbury and districts service area

  2. Reduce barriers regarding vaccination for community members (Ex. distance, location, travel, clinical fears, etc)

  3. Something visually eye catching and welcoming for those who may be afraid of vaccinations, or to attract the attention of those passing by

  4. Make vaccinations as easy to obtain as possible

Outcomes:

  1. Encouraged and succeeded in the vaccination of 14,421 doses (approximately 5% of the total doses administered since December 2020) across the 2 Mobile Vaccination Clinics since their launch in 2021.

  2. Received media coverage across Social Media and traditional media (TV) in regards to the bus’ presence across the district.

  3. Garnered the attention of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his team in July 2022 while visiting Greater Sudbury, where he was photographed with Public Health and City of Greater Sudbury staff outside the Mobile Vaccination Clinic.

Design Process:

During the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Public Health Sudbury & Districts with the City of Greater Sudbury recognized the need to create a mobile vaccination solution within the widespread Northern Ontario communities effected by the pandemic. City of Greater Sudbury offered up 2 bus’ from their fleet, to be used throughout the Sudbury and district service area to act as mobile clinics in order to provide as many COVID-19 vaccines to clients as possible, in as many locations as possible.

We then began research on the other mobile clinic options which has been produced around the world, as Canada and Ontario had yet to roll one out at this time. Pulling inspiration from the corporate branded NHS mobile clinics in the United Kingdom and the highly illustrated versions created by the City of New York and Government of Minnesota we began exploring a design solution which blended both. The design was to be obviously and indistinguishably a part of the Public Health Sudbury & Districts’ vaccination effort, with an honourable mention to the City of Greater Sudbury for their generousity for providing the bus’.

The final design consisted of heart shaped Band-Aids, which were previously used on vaccination stickers and handed out at COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics, so they were already part of the community’s visual consciousness. While also incorporating illustrated COVID-19 virus’ in a variety of agency colours, in order to reduce the fear and stigma surrounding COVID-19 in the early stages of the pandemic. The bus contained bilingual signage built into the wrap in order to create a clear flow of traffic which abided by the COVID-19 guidance at the time of creation. It also contained URL’s on the back and sides of the bus to direct clients to a webpage of constantly evolving and changing COVID-19 guidance surrounding their communities, and updates on vaccination clinics in the area.
