Public Health Sudbury & Districts’ COVID-19 Pandemic Response Signage

My Role:

Lead Graphic Designer and Production Coordinator

Objectives:

  1. Easily produce and distribute COVID-19 related guidance and mandates to community members throughout the Sudbury and districts service area

  2. Eye catching and able to cut through other visual clutter in desired locations

  3. Easy to update as guidance and instructions change

  4. Combat misinformation from less favourable sources

Outcomes:

  1. Mask signage has been downloaded from phsd.ca approximately 1500 times from the website since 2020.

  2. School outbreak signage was distributed to and used throughout approximately 57 schools in the Sudbury district.

  3. Vaccination promotional signage was used to promote the approximately 3766 vaccination clinics within the Sudbury and districts service area, resulting in 564,255 doses administered since December 2020 (as of May 2024).

  4. Anti-Harassment signage was used within all 3122 Public Health-led vaccination clinics in the service area.

Design Process:

Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic the majority of Public Health work and design was reactionary due to changing guidance from government officials and strategy did not get the exploration it deserved. Because of this many of the signage projects throughout the first 2 years of the pandemic were done very fast, with minimal design consultation.

Despite these barriers, we were determined to still create materials that were on-brand, quick to develop due to templates, and accessible to all audiences while still being visually engaging and hopefully cutting through other visual clutter and misinformation during this time.

All signage developed abided by AODA accessibility standards for Print and Digital distribution and was produced in both English and French to meet the needs of our bilingual audience in Northern Ontario.
